Independent Stores are Stronger Together

Convenience Store delivery has been a promising market for years. Covid shutdowns and the work from home craze have only accelerated the inevitable. The next big change for convenience stores is here but the big guys have been the only ones to benefit.

Small businesses do not have the scale to set up their own delivery. The inconsistency of orders makes it unreasonable to hire a driver. That means they have to turn to the delivery apps. Grubhub, Uber Eats, and Doordash are more than happy to deliver orders from a convenience store as long as they get nearly 1/3 of the sale. Chains do not have this problem because they are large enough to negotiate better deals for themselves. Independant store's largest competitors pay a fraction of that 1/3 commission that everyone else has to pay.

The chains also have an easier time making an online store. Uploading a few thousand products onto a Grubhub page might as well be a part-time job. Large companies have the systems and labor available to make this process quick and easy for them.

Even if a small store can manage the high commission and lengthy setup they are left with a problem. The delivery app commission leaves no room for profit. The big chains use their special rates to price everyone else out.

Convenience Store Pie Chart

If all of the independent convenience stores in the US joined together they would be 10 times larger than America’s largest chain, 7-Eleven. That is where Lula comes in. Lula provides the store setup and preferential rates of the large chains to the independent stores. Today, stores that sign up for Lula get a completed store online in 7 days with competitive pricing. All of this comes while guaranteeing that stores are paid their in-store prices for items sold through Lula.
